How Can I File a State Only Return in ProWeb?

It is mandatory that a federal return be marked for electronic filing in order to electronically file a state only return. If a state return is marked “state only” the IRS will not process the federal return and will send the state return to the state.

To electronically file a state only return:

  • Select E-File from within the return. This is usually on the left side of the page. If on the Calculation Page, click Continue.
  • Mark the option Send State Only
  • Select Federal Return Type. you must select Federal Return Type even though it is State Only return being filed.
  • Click on the State Return(s) tab and select the State Return Type
  • Once done, click Save. You will be taken to the Submission page.

There are states that do not accept State Only filing. These are:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma

When electronically filing returns for these states, it is mandatory that you also e-file your Federal return as well.
