Importing a Desktop Return

Many returns prepared in the desktop version of the tax software can be imported into the system. Unfortunately, only limited data is imported. See the attached appendix for further information.

Here is how to retrieve a return from the desktop version:

  • Log in to your account on your desktop computer and navigate to the file server.
  • In the server, select the tax year and pick Import Desktop Returns.
  • Choose the file from the list and upload it. There is also the option to go to This PC and then the Local Disk. Select the software program and the year. Upload into the tax software.
  • If you prefer, you can drag the file name and put it into the Drop files to upload box in a section of the webpage.

All data files are encrypted, which means you will not be able to read them. If you have any questions, contact Support.

The utility to import returns will convert to Form 1040s. It adds critical information, such as:

  • your full name
  • your taxpayer social security number
  • your date of birth
  • Your filing status
  • Spousal information
  • Dependent information
  •  Address information
  • Your phone number
  • W-2 information
