How to Prepare, Purchase, and Submit a Tax Extension
Overview
A tax extension gives additional time to file a return, not additional time to pay taxes owed.
All extensions must be prepared in the software first, then purchased through the Customer Portal to trigger submission.
Step 1: Prepare the Extension in Taxx Savage Software
- Log in to your Taxx Savage Software account
- Open or create the client’s tax return
- Go to the Federal Section
- Select Miscellaneous Forms
- Click Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File (Form 4868)
Step 2: Complete Form 4868
Enter the required information:
- Tax Liability
Enter the total estimated tax liability
(You can use “Use Current Liability Amount” to auto-fill) - Total Payments
Enter total taxes already paid (withholdings + estimated payments) - Amount Paid
Enter any payment being submitted with the extension - Out of Country
Check if the taxpayer is outside the United States on the filing deadline - Electronic Payment (Optional)
If paying electronically, enter bank account details and select a payment date
Step 3: Purchase the Extension (Triggers Submission)
Once Form 4868 is completed:
- Go to the Customer Portal
👉 https://hub.taxxsavage.com/ - Select File Extensions from the left-hand menu
- Extensions are $15 each
- Enter:
- Tax year
- Number of extensions
- For each extension:
- First Initial
- Last Name
- Last 4 of SSN
- Click Add for each entry
- Click Purchase Extensions
- Complete payment through the secure portal
Important:
Submitting payment notifies the review team to process and e-file the extension. No additional steps are required in the software.
Important Notes
- Extensions must be completed in the software before purchase
- Payment in the Customer Portal is what triggers submission
- Extensions and amended returns are processed by the review team
- An extension gives more time to file, not more time to pay
- Pay any estimated taxes by the original deadline to avoid penalties
