How Can I Enter an Identity Protection PIN in ProWeb?

Taxpayers registered to get an Identity Protection PIN are served with IRS Notice CP01A in either the last week of December or the maiden week of January. This PIN is valid for a single year and is changed the following year. It is a mandatory requirement that the IP PIN be part of every individual tax return filed during the year regardless of whether the return is for the present or previous year. This means that the IP PIN for 2022 will be part of every individual tax return filed by the taxpayer in the year 2022, this includes not only the returns for 2022 but also those of the previous years.

An IP PIN is personal. It is given to an individual and not a family. It therefore follows that the PIN will only be entered for the Primary Taxpayer. Whether filed electronically or in paper form, a taxpayer with the PIN must have it in their return. Failure to include the PIN in an electronically filed return will lead to the rejection of the return. If the exclusion of the PIN occurs on a paper filed return, there will be a delay in the processing of the return.

If a taxpayer either forgets the IP PIN, loses or misplaces the CP01A notice, they  can retrieve the IP PIN through the IRS website by clicking here
