How Can I Create, Transmit, Print and View Extensions(Form 4868) on Proweb?
To extend the time frame for filing an individual tax return, a taxpayer is required to use Form 4868.
This form extends the due date from it's normal on 15th April to 15th October.
The taxpayer's due date for paying the tax amount required of them is not extended by Form 4868. The form only extends the time for submitting the return to the IRS.
Therefore, if a taxpayer fails to pay their tax before the deadline date, they will still be penalized and incur interests due to the late payment despite filing Form 4868.
Tax payment has to be made before or on the 15th of April for the IRS to consider it timely paid. To help the taxpayer make their tax payments online, they may make electronic payment requests and send the request alongside the extension. Since electronic payments take time to process, we strongly advise that you send the applications days before the deadline date.
NOTE: E-File extensions can be done from almost all states. The return and the state return are first created before you can create extensions for states. Whilst in the State return, create the extension then mark it for e-filing. To do this, go to the State Section then to Miscellaneous Forms.
How to Create and/or Edit an Extension
- Go to the Client Search and locate the client whom you want to create the extension for
- Proceed to the Federal Section that is within the return
- Then choose Miscellaneous Forms
- Next to Form 4868 (Application for Extension), click BEGIN
- You must then first provide the Required Extension Information before proceeding. The amounts are approximations to be sent to the IRS.
What is the Required Extension Information? These include the following:
- Tax Liability - total estimated tax liability of the taxpayer.
- Tax Payments - payments previously made by the taxpayer toward their tax liability
- Amount Paid with Extensions - when sending this extension to the IRS, there is a certain amount required to accompany the extension. This amount is referred to as the Amount Paid with Extension
- A check box appears the moment you fill in the Amount Paid with Extension: The check box reads “Would you like to pay your balance due electronically?” If you are to make electronic payment, check the box. The Bank Information that follows must be filed, to enable the IRS withdraw their due from the Taxpayer’s funds.
- Requested Payment Date: we strongly advise that you select two or three days prior to the date for sending the extensions. The IRS will not take the payment if the extension is not accepted before or on the payment date.
Transmitting Electronic Extension
To e-file an extension, Form 4868 must be filed with all the details of the client filing the extension.
To transmit an extension
- Select E-File from within the taxpayer’s return
- The program will automatically acknowledge that the return has an extension attached to it. There will be options to File Return, File Extension or Make Changes
- Click on File Extension then check I Understand (to go to a review page, click CONTINUE. Ensure that all your details are correct. To file your extension, click CONTINUE again. Within 24 to 48 hours, the extensions will be processed by the IRS.)
NOTE: The purpose of an extension is to give a taxpayer extra time for submitting their return and not to give extra time for paying the required tax amount.
