How to Collect Our Fees From a State Check if the Customer is Not Getting a Federal Return but Will Receive a State?
If your client is receiving a state tax refund but not a federal refund, collecting your preparation fees directly from the state refund may not be possible. Bank products typically allow for this, but it's generally not an option with non-bank products.
Best Practice:
The recommended way to handle this is to collect your fees from the client upfront before you begin preparing their tax return. This ensures you receive payment for your services regardless of the outcome of their state refund.
Option: You can submit the return through the state by selecting that option in the software and the bank will process the return and collect your fees and all the additional fees that come along with a bank product.
