Amending a 2019 Individual Tax Return - Form 1040-X
Form 1040-X - Amending a 2019 Individual Tax Return
Form 1040-X is used to amend Form 1040/1040-SR which were the initial individual income tax returns as submitted and approved by the IRS. The completion of an amended return requires any tax year unless such an amendment needs a refund from the IRS. Under such a circumstance, the change must be effected within three years from the initial return`s expiration date through Form 1040-X or two years from the payment of the return. Priority is given to the period that comes later. Form 1040-X also allows an amendment where the tax payer is indebted to the IRS. In contrast to other filing statuses` amendment, a change from the Married Filing Joint to Married Filing Separate can only be effected before the original expiration time of the return.
To file an amended return in Taxx Savage Pro Pro one has to start with the initial tax return presented to the IRS. Suppose you had generated the initial return before, you will only need a printed copy of the same for future use in troubleshooting or making the amended return or for storage purposes. What happens when one did not file the initial tax return? You could manually update the information from the original return in Form 1040-X after completing the rectified return. Alternatively, one could recreate the initial tax return to obtain the necessary information.
However, it is best for an individual to email the amended return and the supporting forms to the address per the `Where to File` section in Form 1040-X suppose they are not making an e-filing of the amended return.
How to amend the federal return
Form 1040-X has three sections; Original amount, Correct amount and Net change. A person who has not completed a state amended return has to follow the following procedures to complete Form 1040-X in the Taxx Savage Pro:
- Opening and creating the initial federal return.
- If you created the original return, pull the original amount as you start the amended return.
- Change the initial return appropriately.
- Go back to the amended return and generate the Correct amount.
- Finalize the amended return after providing responses to the questions and an explanation as required.
- Consider enabling electronic filing for the amended return.
How to amend a state return
There are various formats of state amended returns. While other states such as Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, etc use forms that have three sections like Form 1040-X, others make amendments through a check box in the return header. States such as California consider a tax return amended if it has a Schedule X.
Moreover, other states do not allow e-filing of amended returns. In such states, the taxpayer is always made aware in the course of the process.
